I live in Detroit, and got one of those little signal booster things (which apparently really do work, since I have noticed a difference), and I have had very few issues with it ever cutting out (had the same phone for 4 years, so it's not like it needs to be a new model).
Several of my friends have verizon and thus pay like 3 times what I do for comprable plans, and their service is not notably better. But I have heard that things are different if you live in other cities, where Sprint=root of all evil.
