Swmbo,I love what you've said here about the way being part of a fandom can add so much to the pleasure of a particular show. I think it is absolutely true. My first fandom was Star Trek. I watched on my own for years, not really aware of the whole fandom thing. Just had a couple of friends who watched too. It wasn't until Gene Roddenberry came to town to talk that I realized the magnitude of it. We went to see him, thinking that there might be a few hundred people at most there. To my shock, there was a lineup 4 deep all the way around the block. The arena was jammed. That was when I realized that I wasn't the only odd one out there!
The only reason I started watching Buffy was because of my friends who were hooked. It was a revelation to me.
I loved Babylon 5, but it too was something I watched on my own, without much company. I discovered the B5 Lurkers guide on line, and it gave me hours of happy reading, helping to satisfy my need to share my pleasure in the show.
I plan to watch "Lost", mostly because of the enthusiasm from folks on LJ like you. Hope springs eternal; maybe we will find another show to obsess about! Nothing will ever get me like the Jossverse though. Lord of the Rings is close, but Buffy and Angel are always going to have the top spot in my fandom.
